Blocking Websites

Keeping Children safe online can be a difficult task but luckily for us all, there are ways to keep each other safe.

This is one of many Technical help blogs that will come out weekly every Thursday at 5 PM

Technical terms

  • ISP - Internet Service Provider (The company who provides your internet eg: BT)

  • WAN - wide area Network (The Network linked to the world wide web)

  • URL - Unique Reference Link (The website address stated at the top of the web page)

One of the most effective ways to stop your children from visiting sites you don't want them to visit is to manually block the sites you can do this a few different ways, we can start with the easiest but least effective way.

  1. Using a Google add-on which will prevent that account from accessing blocked site addresses

  • Go make sure you are using a supported browser such as Google Chrome

  • Search Chrome store

  • in the Chrome store, search "Site Blocker"

  • Select the extension you think suits you best

  • Install the extension

  • Follow the instructions given by the extension to set it up correctly

2. Blocking Sites via an ISP.

You might want to visit sites that you don't want the little ones visiting so on this one I will explain a way to get around so you can still visit these sites.

2a. Blocking all users (except some ISPs allowing filtering)

For this section, you will need to know your IP address and your router login (Password and username) (which is different from your WIFI SSID (Username) and Password. You will also need a Laptop or PC.

  • Log in to your Default gateway by typing: 192.168.100.1 in your URL Bar, if this doesn't work follow the steps below

  • Go on your PC/ Laptop and search CMD

  • Open Command Prompt

  • In the command prompt type !"ipconfig"

  • Once you press enter you should have something like this:

  • Copy your Default Gateway Address Into your browser and enter your gateway password and user name (By default they are usually Admin and Admin or something similar, you will have to check this by visiting your ISP website.

These are some examples of default usernames

Once you have logged in you will have to follow the steps with your ISP as each one has their own way of blocking sites.

2B.

  • To allow you to keep using sites whilst blocking your children you can buy a separate router

  • Set a new password to the main router

  • Block all the sites on the new router you don't want your kids seeing

  • and allow your kids to only connect to the new router, to keep it simple you can also rename this router to any thing you want in the gateway settings.
